Connect CaptableAI to Claude Code

Anthropic's coding agent in the terminal. Once it's connected, ask about your equity in plain language, upload documents, model a round and export the result, all from the same chat.

Short answer

Run claude mcp add --transport http captable-ai https://mcp.captable.ai/mcp, start Claude Code, type /mcp and choose Authenticate. Your browser opens once for sign-in.

What you need

  • ✓Claude Code installed and signed in.
  • ✓A CaptableAI company where you are an owner or admin.

Set it up

1

Add the server

Run this in your terminal. Add --scope user to make it available in every project, or --scope project to share it with your team through .mcp.json.

Terminal
claude mcp add --transport http captable-ai https://mcp.captable.ai/mcp
2

Authenticate

Start claude, type /mcp, select captable-ai and choose Authenticate. Your browser opens for sign-in.

Inside Claude Code
/mcp
3

Check it's connected

The server should show as connected with its tools listed.

Terminal
claude mcp list
4

Share it with your team (optional)

With project scope, Claude Code writes this to .mcp.json. It holds the address only, so it's safe to commit; each person signs in with their own account.

.mcp.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "captable-ai": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://mcp.captable.ai/mcp"
    }
  }
}

Check it worked

Ask “List the CaptableAI tools you have.” If none appear, run /mcp again and check the server status.

First things to ask

“Write a board-ready ownership summary to docs/cap-table.md.”
“Generate three pool scenarios for a $5M round and save them as CSV in ./models.”
“Compare our cap table with last quarter's export in ./reports and list every change.”

Troubleshooting

Will my teammates share my CaptableAI login?

No. A shared .mcp.json contains the server address only. Everyone authenticates with their own CaptableAI account and sees only the companies they have access to.

Which scope should I use?

Use user scope if it's just for you across projects, and project scope if the repository is where your team works on equity reports.

Can I use it in CI or headless scripts?

For unattended jobs, use the @fairmint/captable-ai CLI rather than the MCP connection, since browser sign-in isn't available there.

Then: upload your documents

CaptableAI builds your cap table by reading your legal documents. These seven habits keep it fast and accurate. Share them with Claude Code.

01 Upload everything first +

Add all of your cap table documents up front, in one batch where possible: incorporation documents, SAFEs, stock and option agreements, board consents. PDF, DOCX, XLSX, DOC and images are supported.

02 Wait for classification +

Each document is read and classified, so the system knows its type and effective date. Don't trigger extraction until every document shows CLASSIFIED.

03 Check the classification dates +

The effective date decides processing order. If one looks wrong, fix it before extraction so the cap table is built in the right sequence.

04 Trigger extraction once +

Extraction doesn't start automatically for agent uploads. Trigger it a single time after everything is classified; the whole queue is picked up.

05 Let the queue run +

Documents are extracted one at a time, earliest first, so later events build on earlier ones. Expect a few minutes per document and don't re-trigger.

06 Validation runs on its own +

When the last document finishes, a company-wide validator checks every extracted object and repairs cross-document issues. There's nothing to trigger.

07 Review, then commit +

When every document reaches PROCESSED, review the drafts and commit. The first commit activates your cap table.
